Greta Garbo, one of Sweden’s greatest movie stars, captured the public with her charisma and seductive voice. Long after she stopped acting, and even after her death, Garbo continues to fascinate the world. In time for the centenary of her birth on September 18, the Stockholm Postmuseum is honoring the Hollywood star with a unique exhibition that will shed light on her myth-shrouded life, with letters, objects, photographs, posters, and postcards. Two new Swedish stamps featuring the movie legend will also be issued in September.

Greta Garbo grew up in a cramped one-room apartment at Blekingegatan 32 on Södermalm, in Stockholm. She lived there with her parents and two older siblings until 1925, when she left for the United States and Hollywood. Although the original building was torn down, the one built in its place bears a plaque to commemorate the fact that she once lived here. A bronze bust of Greta is located at the corner of Blekingegatan/Tjurebergsgatan.

Nine years after her death, Garbo’s ashes were returned to Sweden. Her grave is on a hill in section 12, near Skogskapellet on Skogskyrkogården, where a burial ceremony took place in June 1999.
