Hedelmavati

oipuu_hedelmakulho_bowl.jpgFrom Finland’s Oipuu, Hedelmavati is an unconventional square wooden bowl that uses curved wooden slats to hold its contents. One of many heat-treated birch designs by Oipuu inspired by topography. Oipuu also makes wooden kitchen utensils, bookmarks, clocks, thermometers and more.

Flickr: Books

Here some books about Flickr just released, an exerpt from the flickr blog:

How_to_use_flickr How to Use Flickr: The Ditigal Photography Revolution

This books is a great introduction to Flickr, both in the sense of flickr.com, the website, and Flickr, the, um … socially constructed conceptual framework for a new model of online interaction. It not only runs down the features, but contains a lot of great interviews, sidebars, stories of how people use Flickr, ettiquette, and notes on how the features are getting used and the social dynamics that have evolved. Definitely the book to get a friend or loved one you are trying to "convert" to Flickrism.

Flickr_hacks_1 Flickr Hacks: Tips and Tooks for Sharing Photos Online

Part of the venerable O’Reilly ‘Hacks’ series of books, and co-authored by Paul Bausch (Blogger co-founder and inventor of the permalink!) and Jim Bumgardner (creator of the Flickr Colrpickr and collaborative posters), this book is for the more technically adept Flickr user who’s interested in stretching Flickr functionality to the limits, through the website as well as through the API. With a great forward by Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake.

Building_flickr_applications Flickr Application Development with PHP

This one we haven’t read (it’s not out yet, but is available for pre-order from a few places) but it’s clearly intended for the real geek/programmer, toiling away building new services, sites, features and products using our APIs.

Originally uploaded by coldmountain.

Thanks for coldmountain for this great photo, it’s sure is one of the best images in our Nordic Design photo pool on flickr.

I missed the chance to write about new Kamppi shoping center just after it was opened due the my personal buseness, so I must to do it now.

The new Kamppi shopping center opened on March 2006 in Helsinki. There is over 50 shops and integrated bus station.

The Kamppi Center is designed by the very best architects in Finland. Architect agency Juhani Pallasmaa created the market square, the department store and the adjoining Lasipalatsi Plaza. The Kamppi market square and Lasipalatsi Plaza.

Aki Davidsson architects designed architecture of terminals.

Sick in Finland and the U.S. (From Finland for Thought)

Filed under: Talk — Igor Polyakov @ 2:24 pm

There is a good article posted on Finland for Thought recently, it tells us about the differense in attitude toward the sick persons on work in Finland and the U.S.

Phil writes:

So I’ve been sick the past few days, finally woke up feeling a bit better today. Friday I went into my office, after two hours of coughing and blowing my nose, I got this sense that my co-workers wanted me out of there – so I worked from home the rest of the day.

There’s a big difference in the attitude towards being sick in Finland and in the U.S. I was raised in a family where my mother wouldn’t let me stay home from school unless I was vomitting throughout the night. Sore throats, sneezing, coughing, cold symptoms just meant that I was sent to school with a box of generic-brand (so hard on your nose) kleenexes.

Interior of the Radisson SAS hotel, Aarhus. A great place to take photos. I took three bracketed shots from this angle, and this one was a stop over-exposed. The sunny highlights are completely blown out, but I like the light in the rest of the shot.

Best viewed as large as possible! (more…)

Generally, I collect Scandinavian furniture, but the pieces were not high-end/designer pieces for the time. I think pieces like this or many others I have were for mass consumption and very much influenced by the high style of the like Wegner, Risom, Juhl, Mathsson, Wirkkala, Aalto, etc.
