FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

HIGH-TECH BRINGS BUILDING FACADES INTO THE 21ST CENTURY Finnish Vitrulux Oy. unveils new technology set to to make self-illuminated facades common place

A new blend of art and technology used to light glass-facade buildings is transforming city’s night looks. Over the last year two new buildings in St-Petersburg, Russia have come to life — housing offices by day, and dazzling imagination by night. The buildings’ facades are a mix of glass windows and light-emitting panels which at night cover faces of the buildings with vivid images and rich textures.

Thanks to recent advances in technology and design, self-illuminating facade systems have finally become practical both in terms of longevity and environmental friendliness. This new patented technology delivers a lighting solution compatible with modern construction technologies and minimal construction overhead. Vitrulux Oy., the Finnish company responsible for the two installations in St-Petersburg, has recently launched a website (www.vitrulux.com) which showcases these projects and provides technical background information.

Vitrulux Oy specializes in design and installation of complex and high-tech façade lighting systems for buildings and other urban structures. Our company builds on serious innovative decisions.

Wooden beams

Filed under: Architecture,ND pool on Flickr,Norway — Nordic Design Photo Pool @ 6:46 pm

verhelstaal has added a photo to the pool:

Wooden beams

Wooden beams holding the roof for the Ticketing and Check-in hall at Gardermoen Airport (Oslo, Norway).

The main terminal building at Oslo Gardermoen Airport, completed in 1998, is the largest laminated wood structure in the world. The roof has ten pairs of wooden beams each supported by three solid columns; the secondary structure connecting the pairs of beams is partially visible through the false ceiling, which consists of a perforated metal grid. The grid allows natural light to filter in from above while also reflecting artificial light from below the false ceiling. The enormous ceiling is conceived as a form of decoration for the interior space, featuring the same colours, designs and materials as the interior of the large hall.

Life on a Leaf

Filed under: Architecture,Design blogs — Janne Saarikko @ 1:35 pm

Leaf_side Life on a Leaf is a house project by Jan-Erik Andersson, a multi-disciplinary artist from Turku.

He has started to build a house for himself with a thought of "not all houses must be all square". Thus the house reminds us from a leave.

Jan-Erik Andersson has been doing a multitude of art projects in the past, but this is the first house project for him.

Lots of interesting material on the house including 3D pics and VRML model from the Life on a Leaf website.Leaf_heli

Interesting thing here is that this house is located just 1 km from St. Henry's Ecumenical Art Chapel.

Aurland Lookout, another reason to visit Norway

aurland.jpgAurland Norway is one of greatest architecture masterpieces of modern history. Designed by Todd Saunders and Tommie Wilhelmsen, offers a spectacular view of one of the largest fjords on Norway’s west coast.

Constructed in the most spectacular scenery of fijords near Aurland, this panoramic point situated on the jagged west coast. Architecture of this object joined in complete harmony with environment and create an extreme thrilling experience. Architects designed a 30-metre-long ramp-like walk to the open space, and treating visitors to a breathtaking feeling. A virtually invisible 1.2-metre-high glass barrier perpetuates the sense of potentially falling off the edge of this structure.

On his lewism blog Lewis wrote:

Andrew MacMillan is giving a lecture on the Scottish Architect Charles Rennie Macintosh at the Ateneum-sali Kaivokatu 2, Helsinki on 26.04.2006. Anyone who is interested in Finnish Jugendstil and Finnish art at the turn of the century should definitely think about attending. Macintosh was a great illustrator and interior designer as well as an Architect and being contemporary with people like Eliel Saarinen and the jugendstil style of Helsinki old town will make for a fascinating comparison. The lecture is only part of the art on silver screen series being held at the ateneum. Its a really interesting series so I have enclosed the programme of the press release below. Also see the Design Museum page on Macintosh.

I missed the chance to write about new Kamppi shoping center just after it was opened due the my personal buseness, so I must to do it now.

The new Kamppi shopping center opened on March 2006 in Helsinki. There is over 50 shops and integrated bus station.

The Kamppi Center is designed by the very best architects in Finland. Architect agency Juhani Pallasmaa created the market square, the department store and the adjoining Lasipalatsi Plaza. The Kamppi market square and Lasipalatsi Plaza.
