The latest restaurant design by Ralston & Bau is an intimate space in Paris that is dedicated to a balanced fusion of Japanese and French gastronomy. “Sous les Cerisiers” (under the cherry trees) is an invitation to taste the delicious cooking of Sakura. Both cultures have influenced the theatrical interior concept. The classic opera and geisha cultures from France and Japan can be seen in the scenographic layers, costumes and shadows cast throughout the interior. A contrast of dark and light spaces divides the room: the bright area with the bar as a center point is used for cooking courses during the daytime, and the dark part, following a perspective angle, including a VIP space to enjoy a gastronomic menu at night. Moveable and translucent walls separate the seating areas for privacy.

The theatrical influence from the interior design is continued in the development of the visual identity of the “Sous les Cerisiers” restaurant. A traditional textile costume clasp with soft, natural curves was the inspiration for the logo. The menu cards soft golden paper follows up the costume idea: through pre-punched holes a delicate ribbon bound the changeable menu sheets inside. Each menu uses a different style of classical theatre costume ribbon.

 

The stool Nitton° is a product from a sustainability project. Questions like “How can a stool be designed to be more environmentally friendly, economically profitable and with social features?

The stool is made from thin layers of wood that are pressed together with glue and heat. The glue is a new type that is not dangerous for our environment and is extra hard to allow the thin construction. Thin construction minimizes material and double curved surfaces allow maximum weight. To give it social values the stool is designed to comfort a small group of up to nineteen people. If you put nineteen stools together you get a circle that is the perfect size for a small group when communicating, everyone can have eye contact and easily hear each other, perfect for schools, libraries and museums.

The name Nitton° is the Swedish word for nineteen, the degree sign connects to the stools curve that is also nineteen.

The stool will be shown at the fair “Hem 2009” in Stockholm, Sweden this week 1-4 October

Now take a break from design and return to life in Nordic Countries, to be correct, in one of them – Finland.

When I opened up my RSS reader and checked the Finland for thought feed, I don’t believed my eyes and sat down stagnated a while. My first impression was scaring, judge itself:

Helsinki and Vantaa police spot-checking foreigners without residence permit
Inspections in shopping malls and stations

The Helsinki and Vantaa police departments have stepped up the inspections of foreigners’ residence permits. Police officers are making spot checks in places where foreigners typically gather, including shopping malls, railway stations, and harbours.

In Vantaa, spot checks have been made in the shopping centres of Myyrmanni and Jumbo, among others. In Espoo, random inspections are not worthwhile, as the number of targets would be comparatively low, says Chief Inspector Aaro Väätäinen.

Anyone looking or sounding foreign can be chosen as the target of spot checks. ”A foreigner is always obliged to explain why he or she is in Finland. However, they do not have to carry all relevant documents with them all the time, as the facts can be checked through a computer network” reports Chief Inspector Jouko Aromäki from the Vantaa police. ”At some point we will certainly have a meeting involving the police, the Customs, and the Border Guard in order to discuss how the authorities are to cooperate in the matter”, notes Jaakko Heinilä, the head of the Investigation Unit at the Helsinki Immigration Police. ”The point of these checks is to maintain order and security in public places, with a view to the wellbeing of all citizens and residents of this country”, stresses Heinilä.

Here is important point of this publication that giving the whole story more bad smelling twist:

Typically, a foreigner without a residence permit comes from Africa or from the Middle East. Unable to present any identity card, he or she has come into Finland through another Schengen country, without facing border immigration control formalities.

Obviously, these checks will be focused mainly on non-caucasian race persons.

“The Nordic Region should be declared free of genetically modified organisms and the Nordic countries should join other European states like Austria, Greece and Poland, which have already declared themselves GMO-free zones,” according to a proposal by the Lef-Socialist Green Group (VSG) on the Nordic Council.
