Media Art Research Interdisciplinary Network – M.A.R.I.N. – will organize two one month long residencies during June and August 2011 around the Baltic Sea. We invite proposals by artists, scientists or collaborative initiatives to attend either for June or August 2011.
While we are open to many ideas, we hope to get research-oriented proposals that relate with the marine environment. Also projects that look at alternative energy in a nomadic camp, environmental sensors, low power computing are on our wish-list. (In other words, no poetic videos contemplating the sea!)

The June residency themed Sensing the Baltic Sea (June 1st-30th) will be situated on three Baltic Sea islands in Finland and end in Tallinn, Estonia. On each island there are basic facilities, and we will set up our own camp using wind and solar power.

The August residency, themed Cartography and Everyday at Sea (August 1st-31st) will start in Stavanger in Norway, shift to an island in Sweden and finish on a beautiful peninsula in Lithuania.

CALL OPEN FEB 26th – MAR 21st 2011

Scandinavian design has become a standard in many modern households due to the rising popularity of the green movement as well as the simplicity it presents to a complicated world. This new trend first emerged to the world in the 1950s and has only recently become a staple of modern simplicity. It has since come to represent a new world order of a unique simplicity which combines both form and function in a new “artistic” movement.

The new Scandinavian designs have come to replicate earlier twentieth century art movements, such as the German Bauhaus movement which incorporated much of the same values. These artists reduced previous movements to the bare minimum, attempting to create a new utopian sense of harmony and order during the early twentieth century. The absence of ornamentation was the most prominent feature of this specific school of art design and the artists instead turned to functional and rational building. This entailed a denunciation of many other art forms of the time which were seen as too “cluttered” such as the previous Romanesque building styles which became a pre-WWI style, with a new post-war style evident in the Bauhaus. The new mass-produced consumerism of the time led to an era of cheap and functional consumer goods which is what the Bauhaus school strived to capture in their work, relying on the simplicity of nature. The Bauhaus school attempted to combine art, craft, and technology through their works and thus led Germany into a modern world art order. Modern Scandinavian design is similar to this earlier Bauhaus culture because of the way in which they strive to make their work solely about the form and harmonious order, rather than ornamentation and decoration.

This simplistic way of life has become ever abundant in a world where so much of our lives lack the ease with which these designs represent. The boom in Scandinavian design in the past decade is largely due to the new global world order which promotes the combination of many different international cultures and the meshing together of various traditions. This has since led to the incorporation of many foreign designs into many countries such as the United States which is forever on the lookout for new realms of simplicity. The additional popularity of stores such as IKEA has led American culture to assimilate toward this new simplistic realm of design, with almost every household containing some IKEA furniture or decorations. IKEA has particularly helped in introducing American society to the new eco-friendly movement: using cloth bags at the checkout counter or no bags at all and the use of environmentally friendly materials. These newfound designs have already become mainstream in Western society and have helped in promoting the “Green” movement across the ocean, which will inevitably help preserve our future environment.

ITALY’S NEWEST BOUTIQUE SCHOOL OF DESIGN
THE FLORENCE INSTITUTE, WELCOMES STUDENTS FOR ENROLLMENT
-Architecture industry veteran, DiDomenico, to head prestigious International design school in the heart of Florence Italy-

FLORENCE, ITALY – Just opened in the historic center of Florence, a new international design school will welcome students from all over the world to commence the first full session in January. The Florence Institute of Design International offers a new type of boutique academics focused entirely on international students providing Interior Design, Graphic Design and Architecture programs with both master and semester abroad options available, as announced by Founder and Creative Director, Architect Marc DiDomenico.

As the city of Florence has become an international crossroads for design students, The Florence Institute of Design International will build upon this rich history of art, culture and design, while providing students with a unique international learning experience where methodology and curriculum is designed for the broad and diverse set of students and focused on personalization of studies. Boutique by design, the Institute’s philosophy is to provide a first-class facility offering the highest level of education and resources to design students around the world.

“The key to this institute is the diversity and understanding of the student set,” said DiDomenico. “By expanding to encompass students from all over the world, the multi-cultured backgrounds of the students create an elevated level of complexity and need for varied methods of teaching. As most applicants to the Florence Institute have studied at the best schools in their own countries, we strive to create the same level of academic excellence, offering the highest standard in design education abroad. We look forward to providing the design foundation to lead this next generation of international designers.”

The Florence Institute’s courses teach the foundation of Italian design by combining modern technologies with Italy’s imaginative culture. The program merges tradition with technology, providing a detailed understanding of the Italian creative process. The course format is inspirational rather than institutional in the way it juxtaposes the concepts of new with traditional to stimulate thinking about how different periods can be integrated.

Set within the hills of Tuscany, Florence has long been known as an ideal destination for design students due to the rich patrimony of Renaissance works. Its modest scale and pedestrian friendly environment make it is an ideal place to study design.

About Architect Marc DiDomenico
Founder and Creative Director Marc DiDomenico, also the 2009 President of the AIA Continental Europe, has collaborated with some of the leading design studios such as those of Massimo Carmassi and Andrea Ponsi. He holds titles as architect in both Italy and the United States. DiDomenico’s experience in architecture, interiors, competitions, and preservation brings a professional emphasis to the school’s academic structure as he will oversee The Florence Institute’s academic programs and instruct critical parts of the Interior Design courses.

Örebro University is now going through its most expansive phase since its formation in 1977. We are in the midst of creating a campus that in the widest possible sense gives the students, staff and guests an excellent intellectual, social and physical environment.

The University is also taking an active part in the development of the region with strong contacts with industry and the community and is also a national and international centre for knowledge.

Signs of the characteristic campus spirit of openness, exchange and collaboration are the many multidisciplinary research teams and the informal atmosphere between students and staff.
