Wonderwater Frozen Lights will be a dramatic installation of ice lanterns in Helsinki’s Senate Square to celebrate the Open Doors Weekend of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012.

The display will help raise awareness of the water footprint. Two massive ice blocks from Lapland each represent the water footprint of 3 873 litres used daily per person in Finland, while 150 litre ice lanterns represent the domestic use per person in Finland.

Illuminating the darkest season of the year, Wonderwater has invited designers and architects to sculpt lanterns on site. The designer teams include: Artek Studio, Ilkka Suppanen, Team Brita Flander, Sebastian Jansson & MottoWasabi, Architect Group A6 and Team Aalto University. In the sprit of WDC Helsinki 2012 theme of openness and collaboration, the people of Helsinki are invited to participate by designing their own ice lantern and bringing it to the event or share their designs on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wonderwaterevents. A jury will award prizes to the best Frozen Light design in each class.

Wonderwater and WWF Finland Wonderwater is joining forces with WWF Finland to raise awareness of the water footprint. ”Finland is one of the richest countries when it comes to water resources. A significant part of the products that Finns use, like groceries and cotton, however, originate in areas with limited water resources. Our consumption habits affect the state of water environment. WWF wishes to devote more attention to tackling the issue of the water footprint in Finland. Together with Wonderwater, we can illustrate this issue in an interesting way”, says Jussi Nikula, WWF Finland Program Manager.

Christian Nold (UK) has been invited to realise a new art project in Helsinki during 2011-2012. This new project called ‘Suomenlinna Money Lab‘ will take place on Suomenlinna island. Christian is visiting Helsinki 7-12 September and will lead two workshops on the island on September 8 & 10.

Suomenlinna Money Lab workshops / September 8 & 10

What if Suomenlinna would have its own currency? Money carries social and cultural value that is more than monetary. What does ‘local’ value mean in the context of the island? Join us for an informal discussion, to share your personal stories, utopian ideas of the island and brainstorm some projects. The two independent workshop will last 2 1/2 hours and will guide the planning process of the Suomenlinna Money Lab. Anybody who is interested is warmly welcome to participate! There are no specific skills required and it’s free!

Media Art Research Interdisciplinary Network – M.A.R.I.N. – will organize two one month long residencies during June and August 2011 around the Baltic Sea. We invite proposals by artists, scientists or collaborative initiatives to attend either for June or August 2011. While we are open to many ideas, we hope to get research-oriented proposals that relate with the marine environment. Also projects that look at alternative energy in a nomadic camp, environmental sensors, low power computing are on our wish-list. (In other words, no poetic videos contemplating the sea!)

The June residency themed Sensing the Baltic Sea (June 1st-30th) will be situated on three Baltic Sea islands in Finland and end in Tallinn, Estonia. On each island there are basic facilities, and we will set up our own camp using wind and solar power.

The August residency, themed Cartography and Everyday at Sea (August 1st-31st) will start in Stavanger in Norway, shift to an island in Sweden and finish on a beautiful peninsula in Lithuania.

PRE-FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS

We are happy to announce 3 additional pre-festival workshops:

:: Temporary photoElectric Digestopians worklab

A co-creation worklab with research based experimentations on the transformation of light energy into electric energy with food. Fusing cooking and solar tech and designs, the participants will work with edible materials to create ‘e-tapas’ of different aesthetics and tastes. A principal role is for the Aronia Melanocarpa (Choke/Apple berry), one of the most powerful, anti-oxidant rich berries both in terms of kJoules and microWatts, entangled in a rich global historical narrative. To be tested, tasted and appreciated on heliotropic tickling tongues.

The worklab will be lead by Bartaku / FoAM.

:: Timelab: the Mini-CNC kit Over the past 9 months we have been developing a lasercut kit for a small, sturdy, desktop-sized, 
computer-controlled milling machine. So far we have used it to mill wood, plexi, PCB’s and one table surface. We bring parts for 8 machines with us to Pixelache and would love to build them together with you.

The workshop is hosted by Lieven Standaert & Kurt Van Houtte / Timelab.

:: Deptford TV: C/Overt operations with CCTV sniffing and collaborative open source video editing This workshop will attempt to identify and document secret (covert) places, strategies and messages in our everyday surroundings. We will use overt, co-operative tactics and practice openness and transparency to push the covert into clearer view.

Our main tool for this workshop will be easily to obtained, simple to use and perfectly legal video receivers that can intercept the data collected by small CCTV video cameras often placed covertly in shops, offices and other public/private spaces. But we will also use ordinary media-gathering devices, our own eyes and ears and our social skills to identify and record evidence of covert operations in our midst, whether this is capturing gossip and rumour about the Suomenlinna’s Island fortress or observing city planners’ attempts to ‘design out’ specific social behaviours.

The workshop is hosted by Adnan Hadzi, Lisa Haskel and Larisa Blazic.

Pixelversity is the outreach & education programme of Pixelache Helsinki scene around the year.

Pedagogy is based on learning from experience and from peers: Learning by doing, and doing it together. The programme variably consists of presentations, workshops, and other events: Some which share and sustain ongoing local practice, while others benefit from serendipity and specialists visiting Helsinki, or supporting activity that happens outside the usual locations.

Pixelversity aims to be a ‘learning bridge’ between practitioners, cultural and non-profit organisations, interested individuals and larger institutions, and an outreach programme extending beyond Helsinki.

The Pixelversity Programme 2011 is composed of proposals from artists, makers, organisers and researchers who are Pixelache association members, and invited guest contributors.
