Nordic Museum architects selected: “The Nordic Heritage”

Located in Ballard, Seattle, USA, the Nordic Heritage is the only museum in the U.S. dedicated to preserving the history of the five Nordic countries: Denmark; Finland; Iceland; Norway; and Sweden.

With a rich history in Ballard, the museum was founded in 1979 with a mission to honor the Scandinavian immigrants who arrived in the Northwest in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Now a new Nordic Heritage Museum building planned to be built on Market Street of Ballard.

The design team includes Juhani Pallasmaa, a well known Finnish architect, and top exhibit designers, Andr/ and Associates from Victoria, British Columbia, known for their work at the Hong Kong Museum of History and the Jämtlands läns Museum in Sweden.

Pallasmaa, an architect, author and professor, has experience as a museum designer and museum director.

From Wikipedia:

Scandinavian Culture in Ballard
Historically Ballard is the traditional center of Seattle’s ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community, who were drawn to the area because of the salmon fishing opportunities.[23] In recent years the decline of the fishing industry has decreased the proportion of Scandinavian residents but the neighborhood is still proud of its heritage. Ballard is home to the Nordic Heritage Museum, which celebrates both the community of Ballard and the local Scandinavian history. Each year the community celebrates Norwegian Constitution Day (also called Syttendi Mai) on the 17th of May to commemorate the signing of the Norwegian Constitution.[24] Locals still refer to the neighborhood as “Snoose Junction,” a reference to the old Scandinavian settlers’ practice of using snus.[25] Walking in downtown Ballard much of the old flavor can still be seen as there are still many shops and Bakeries with a Scandinavian theme and some businesses hang out flags from the Scandinavian countries.

Scandinavian Design beyond the Myth

The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design of Norway

scandinavian_design_chair_loop_eng1_large.jpg Scandinavian Design beyond the Myth, Exhibition, 07.11.2003—14.05.2006.

From website of The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design of Norway:

Despite the mock funeral service held in 1980 for the term Scandinavian design by a group of Oslo designers, Scandinavian design ideals that emerged in the 1950s have survived in the Nordic countries. This must be seen, in part, as the result of an international interest in this period’s design on a world basis. A number of international designers have found a source of inspiration in this “golden age” as well as in our contemporary Nordic design where the demand for minimalism, stylisation and a new interpretation has been dominant. Indeed, many Scandinavian designers have felt this earlier tradition to be a burden, but to an even greater number it has brought inspiration and self-assurance.

Swans in KiasmaArt is part of humanity at ARS 06 In 2006, The Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma will organise the 7th international ARS exhibition, an important review of contemporary art in the 21st century. The first ARS exhibition was held in 1961. Art seeks diverse ways of understanding reality. All ARS exhibitions have aroused discussion and many of the works exhibited have continued to live on in the minds of the spectators. Each ARS exhibition has formed a picture of its time and offered unforgettable experiences. Approximately 40 artists and collectives from almost 20 countries are to participate in the exhibition. In the exhibition, the participating artists will either present several works or one extensive work. The participants will include four Finnish artists. The works exhibited offer moving experiences, small miracles. ARS 06 concentrates on art’s role as a part of the human experience. The works will be accompanied by changing projects. The programme is varied and includes events, seminars, workshops and lectures, as well as a series of performances in the Kiasma Theatre. ARS 06 21 Jan- 27 Aug 2006

Trapholt museum

trapholtchair2Trapholt is one of the largest and most popular museums in Denmark outside of Copenhagen. Opened in 1988, Trapholt is situated in beautiful natural surroundings, with a view out over Kolding Fjord. The museum is easily accessible for disabled people, and children are welcome. Packed lunches, etc. are naturally welcome. There is a large car park close to the main entrance, where coaches are also free to park. The museum conducts tours for groups.

Trapholt contains:

-A large collection of modern Danish visual art

-A Richard Mortensen exhibition

-A museum of furniture design, featuring modern Danish furniture design

-Special exhibitions - 3 to 4 each year

-Collections of applied art, primarily ceramics and textiles

-Collections of product design, primarily tableware

-A sculpture garden, featuring works by contemporary Danish artists

-A café, serving beverages and light dishes, and with a beautiful view of the fjord
